A compelling dialogue between Philippe Rahm and Da Vinci.

Leonardo Da Vinci: Through Space and Time was a celebration of innovation across space and time, bridging art and science while uniting great polymaths of the past and present.

Leonardo Da Vinci: Through Space and Time was a celebration of innovation across time and space, bridging art and science while uniting great polymaths of the past and present.

The first Saudi exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci’s original artworks presented in collaboration with Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan: this exhibition showcased a compelling dialogue between Da Vinci and the world renowned contemporary artist Philippe Rahm, who created a site-specific artwork especially for this exhibition around the theme of ENERGY

The Aimes was commissioned to develop a detailed concept and experience on this topic, including full exhibition production video and graphical content, AV & technology, print assets such as leaflets, interpretation plans, layout designs, custom scenographic production, on site installation and operation of the exhibition for 1 month. Many challenges were faced and overcome:

Time factor: We had only 8 weeks to conceive, build and install the exhibition. This included signing the loan agreements with the lender, an extremely lengthy and challenging process between the Italian government and the Vatican State.

Cultural mediation: Leonardo was presented for the first time in KSA and this demanded the perfect approach emphasising all the links between Arab scholars and Da Vinci. We utilised our curatorial team to dive into the history books and extract provenance linking these aspects.

Logistics: No temporary importation regulation for artworks existed in Saudi at the time and no official international customs clearance procedures for these kinds of valuable artefacts were in place.
We approached these challenges using our vast experience and by methodically anticipating all the difficulties we would face. Our team based in Italy was in charge of developing the exhibition concept with the museum director, the curator and the digital content creators while our teams in KSA and in Dubai focused on logistics, technical layout, exhibition fabrication, site-specific artwork production and on the ground installation and operations. All loan procedures and agreements for such important artworks were followed meticulously by the project director, who was very experienced in international loan agreements, art export and authorizations.

Defining the production processes and assigning clear roles and responsibilities within the team was vital to our success. All key roles and positions were managed directly by TheAimes’ in-house personnel, a tried and tested team used to working in the Region and seeing through every phrase of exhibition production to perfection.

Under the Project Director a team of 6 managers was in charge of the main exhibition production activities:

• Concept definition and artworks selection: Loan agreements, exportation authorization,insurances;
• Logistics and installation
• Layout conception and production including site specific artwork production: • Content conception, translation and graphic design:
• Content and digital production.
