A unique, holistic approach to
the past, present and future.
TheAimes produced the stunning exhibition What Lies Within, the first of a series in AlUla celebrating the legacy of pioneering collectors and patrons in Saudi Arabia.
This exhibition, curated by Lulwah AlHomoud, consists of artwork from the past two decades by seventeen of the most significant artists of Saudi Arabia and its diaspora, all from the private collection of patron and collector Basma AlSulaiman.
The artists featured included Manal AlDowayan, Shadia Alem, Adel AlQuraishi, Nasser AlSalem, Dana Awartani, Maha Malluh, Ahmed Mater, Filwa Nazer and more; each artist selected for the exhibition has a unique, holistic approach to exploring the past, present and future, with a range of themes around heritage, identity and place. Among the most important works was “The Black Arch” by Shadia Alem, with site-specific audio and visual elements connecting AlUla and Mecca, exhibited for the first time in KSA following its debut at the Venice Biennale (2011).
TheAimes was commissioned by the RCU to design and develop the exhibition scenography design, full exhibition production, transportation of the artworks from KSA and Europe.
TheAimes creative team designed the brand and all print assets such as catalogue, leaflets, visitor guide and tote bags, on-site installation, operations and dismantling.
The greatest challenges for this project were geographical – AlUla is in the middle of the desert and thus logistically challenging for transport and storage – as well as that, the venue itself was 27 metres tall and required a unique, highly specialised design to accommodate the 7000kg Black Arch.
In the end, the outcomes vastly exceeded the hopes of the client, with more than 10,000 visitors from all over the world and an extremely high ratio of VIPs in attendance.
